UTIPS (Utah Test Item Pool Service)
UTIPS Assessments for Peer Tutors
For this project I worked with Heather Weiler at Jordan High School. With the help of the sewing teacher, she created a basic assessment for her peer tutors. The goal was to see which students would be able to assist her special needs students in a sewing class.
After the assessment was created, I helped her assign the test to the students in her peer tutor class. She created an enrollment code for the class and we set a date to administer the test. On the morning of the test, I met in her classroom and we set up my laptop, her laptop, and our iPads so that the peer tutors who were helping that morning could take the test. I helped 5-6 students to create new accounts by adding the enrollment code for the class. One student already had a UTIPS account, so she just added the enrollment code. Once Heather felt confident that she could administer the test, I left and she helped the remaining peer tutors take the assessment. We got some great feedback for her and she felt confident that assessments like this would help her to better place peer tutors with her students in classes where they would be most able to help with the work required for the class. This image shows the level of competency among students who took the assessment. The initial success rate was lower, but we adjusted the competency level because we felt that while a lower level of competency was not ideal, her peer tutors would be able to learn along with others in the class to make up the gap.
Summary
Overall, this was a great experience for me as a teacher and an ed tech. I was able to work directly with students to see some of the issues that might arise when other teachers administer UTIPS assessments. I was also able to work with a teacher and her classroom aide so that they felt comfortable administering these kinds of assessments in the future. It gave me the confidence to be able to help teachers to use this tool in the future.
